A common question we get in the store is what is the best type of pool table ball? Like most things you buy, that really depends on who is using the pool table and how much do you really want to invest. A standard set of polyester billiard balls under $100 online or at your local sporting goods store might work well it the table is for kids or very casual play. The big trade off will be in accuracy of roll and how long the ball set lasts before you have to buy another set of billiard balls. Generally, expect to replace your Polyester economy billiard ball set every few years due to chipping or flat spots developing on the balls. On a slate top pool table for adult play this is a pretty big compromise.
If you want a ball set that is a long term investment and lasts years or decades look into 100% Phenolic Resin balls. The up front cost will be double or more, but you will get a ball set that not only rolls with more precision, but also rebounds and "bites" the cloth in a completely different way. There are grades of 100% phenolic balls with the best quality coming from the Belgian Aramith company or Dynasphere. Most professional level ball sets are being made by these two companies using patented and proprietary composites and should last a lifetime in residential play. This includes Brunswick, Olhausen, and Predator balls, which are made under licensing agreements with these companies.
Another option is a Poly Phenolic resin hybrid ball set. This type of reinforced composite material blend is great for bridging the gap between low-quality polyester billiard balls and the pricier 100% phenolic options.
